Competition Description

iDAPT Centre for Rehabilitation Research has created an explosive growth in innovative solutions and product ideas in a range of disciplines in healthcare. The healthcare industry is full of exciting new changes and disruptive ideas and startups that ask, and answer, the question: Isn’t there a better way to do this?

The iDAPT Centre for Rehabilitation Research, In partnership Age-Well NCE and Toronto Rehab Foundation, will host its first POWER PLAY Pitch Competition at Toronto Rehab on June 19th, 2017. The event provides a chance for Canada’s top early-stage and emerging growth ventures in healthcare devices, and innovative healthcare solutions, to pitch to investors for the chance to win one of 5 prizes totaling $60k in support funds.

This competition allows the opportunity to:

  •  Improve lives by bringing innovative health solutions to patients
  •  Encourage entrepreneurship in the healthcare industry by bringing together investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators
  •  Grow the medical innovation ecosystem in Canada
  •  Connect investors and industry partners with innovators and early stage start-up companies

Innovators and startup companies will have the opportunity to present to industry professionals, successful healthcare and business entrepreneurs, and investors in an five-minute “Dragons’ Den-style” pitch competition.

Entrepreneurs across all stages in their concept development or startup journey can apply to the PowerPlay Pitch Competition. Competitive applicants will address a specific and pressing unmet need in the healthcare industry. We're open to entrepreneurs with raw ideas as well as functioning startups. We consider individuals with innovations at various stages of development, from fully developed concepts and prototypes, to finished products and services that are seeking capital to help bring their innovations to the next stage.

On the merit of their live pitches, judges will select the top startups/concepts for a cash and prize award at the event. Additionally, there will be ample opportunity to meet and connect with leaders in the healthcare industry

 

The Prize

1st place prize $ 30,000

2nd place prize $15,000

3rd place prize $5,000

2nd place prize $2,000

Eligibility

We are looking for energetic, innovative and passionate healthcare innovators. Competitive applicants will address a specific and pressing unmet need in the healthcare industry. For example, solutions of interest may improve patient engagement, preventative healthcare solutions, solutions for healthcare challenges, early to mid-stage medical device start ups, assistive devices, diagnostic tools, and digital health start ups are all invited to participate.

We consider individuals with innovations at various stages of development, from fully developed concepts and prototypes to finished products and services that are seeking capital to help bring their innovations to the next stage.

There is no registration fee.

Space is limited to TEN 5-minute pitches, which will be selected from the pool of applicants by PowerPlay’s Organizing Committee.

Entrepreneurs across all stages in their concept development or startup journey can apply to the PowerPlay Pitch Competition. We're open to entrepreneurs with raw ideas as well as functioning startups.

There are two categories for the competition:

·        The Innovative Concept category features innovative healthcare ideas, innovations, business plans, proposals to optimize the healthcare system, and change making ideas to make a transformative impact on all levels of the health system.

·        The Innovative Start-Up category comprises early-stage startups have who have a proven concept and are investigating and taking steps to enter into the healthcare marketplace.

We accept the following stages of startups:

·        Prototype Blueprint Developed - No current users

·        Prototype Developed - No current users

·        Prototype Developed - Pilot users

·        Product Developed - Current users

PowerPlay Important dates

Stage One: Application Submission

Due Date: May 12th 2017

Each competitor/team will submit a 2-4 page business plan summary. Those who have finished business plans are encouraged to submit them. Otherwise, the submission should be in the prescribed business plan summary format available online. The final deadline to apply is May 12th 2017.

The business plan summary should define the specifics of your concept/company’s operations and sell potential investors on your business. It should make evident to stakeholders, including donors and investors, that there is potential for substantial growth and market power with a sustainable and novel product or service offering. Stage Two: Assessment Phase 

Date: May 16th 2017

A panel of judges will review the submissions  select 10 finalists and 5 Runners up for the competition. Judging will be based on the following criteria:

  • Teams background and expertise
  • Idea/Solution
  • Development plan
  • Market opportunity
  • Competitive advantages

Finalists: Competition finalists will be announced on May 17th

Runners-Up: In the event that a finalist can't make it to the event, gets disqualified, or withdraws, the runners up will be contacted to replace finalists based on their order.

Stage Three: The PowerPlay Grand Finale

Top ten participants will get an opportunity to present their ideas at the PowerPlay Pitch competition on June 19th 2017 at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. The winners will be announced & awarded at the competition.

All Finalists will be featured on, UHN, TRI Foundation, TRI Research, and AgeWell NCE’s newsletters, website, and social media.

The Booth

Successful applicants will receive a complimentary 6×8 foot booth, to showcase their concept or startup company at the competition. This exclusive opportunity gives presenters access to experts, industry leaders, face-to-face meetings with investors, fascinating discussions, and networking opportunities.

Further, the winners of the competition will be provided with a platform to showcase their concept/startup companies in the RBC iDAPT Innovations Gallery at Toronto Rehab, this incredible opportunity will help further expand the development of their company.

The Prospectus

Your booth should have a simplified prospectus available for interested investors.

The prospectus describes the funds' investment objectives and strategies, their fees and expenses, and the risks inherent in investing in your company. Investors always read a prospectus carefully before making any investment decision.

Judges will receive a score card to evaluate each pitch; scores will be collected and tallied at the end of the competition. Judges will go into the debate room to choose the order of the winners.

All interested ventures will also get the opportunity to participate in a pre-event pitch workshop to help them prepare for the pitch competition.

Business Plan and Stage Craft Workshop

Date: May 19th  2017

Time: 12:30pm-4:30pm

Location: 550 University Ave, Toronto Rehab, Lecture Theater- Basement.

At this informative workshop, attendees will gain an understanding of the key components of writing a meaningful business plan and how each section connects tell a captivating story about why your business will be successful, and how you will get there. The core sections typically included in a business plan will be examined. Innovators and startup teams get their questions answered about what investors are looking for and learn how to improve their current business plan at this informative workshop.

Public speaking is considered one of the scariest things to do. The good news is, if you speak with clarity, accuracy, and impact, you’re more likely to capture the attention potential investors and the audience’s attention. Attendees will learn the basics of effective stagecraft; key mistakes people make in pitching and how to avoid them; How to capture your audience’s attention based on empirically proven principles; How to create messages with more impact, and much more.

Prototyping Workshop

Date: May 24th  2017

Time: 9:00am-11:30pm

Location: 550 University Ave, Toronto Rehab, Lecture Theater- Basement.

In this session, Innovators and startup teams will learn about the powerful tools that can help them bring their ideas to life. Attendees will be taken through exercises that teach how to implement a process of discovery for projects. Participants will learn about testing and evaluation, prototyping to ensure a product’s viability, relevant regulations, and receive help to reveal critical areas for improvements—before a product hits the PowerPlay stage.

Attendees will also learn about the rapid prototyping and design services available to them at Toronto Rehab-UC.

Whether you’re an investor seeking access to new early-stage deals, or a CEO looking for funding, visibility, and growth, this invite-only event offers the opportunity for real dialogue and relationship-building, with the goal of eventual capital allocations.
